Many educators of young children report that they lack the background knowledge to comfortably lead learners when exploring various topics and subject areas, particularly in math and science. Similarly, experiences with nature for children and their families outside of the school or learning center vary tremendously.  Knowledge, attitudes and behaviors with respect to nature are equally varied.

Growing Up WILD demonstrates through its materials and training programs how early childhood learning objectives can be reached through use of the outdoors and nature-themed activities combined with art, music, and play.  It also builds the confidence of early childhood educators to lead outdoor explorations by providing ready-made activities, easily digestible background information, and high quality personal training programs.

Head Start is a U.S. federal program with the overall goal of readying young children for school. It offers educational, health, nutritional, and social services to young children that enhance social and cognitive development.

The Head Start Child Outcomes Framework provides long-term goals for early childhood programs connected with Head Start, and is a helpful resource for anyone involved in early childhood education. The framework identifies eight general domains: (1) language development, (2) literacy, (3) mathematics, (4) science, (5) creative arts, (6) social and emotional development, (7) approaches to learning, and (8) physical health and development. It also specifies over 100 sample indicators of children’s learning within those domains.

Growing Up WILD activities all address one or more of the Head Start Domains, and may be used to address many of the Head Start indicators. Each Growing Up WILD activity includes codes showing the Head Start Domains and indicators met by that activity.

A list of numerical codes identifying which Head Start Domains are addressed by each Growing Up WILD activity is available below.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) offers accreditation to early childhood education programs that meet specific standards in education, health, and safety. To achieve accreditation, early childhood programs volunteer to be measured against these national standards.

NAEYC’s Standard 2 focuses on accreditation criteria for curriculum. To meet this standard, early childhood programs must implement a curriculum that is consistent with NAEYC’s goals for children and that promotes learning and development in the areas of social, emotional, physical, language, and cognitive development. Growing Up WILD activities all address one or more of the NAEYC Standard 2 topic areas. Each Growing Up WILD activity includes codes to identify the Standard 2 topic areas addressed.

A list of numerical codes identifying which National Association of Education for Young Children (NAEYC) Accreditation Criteria are addressed by each Growing Up WILD activity are available below.
